Brooke Herter James is the 2024 winner of the prestigious Fish Prize for her poem,
No, I am not a Robot (An Ekphrastic Poem of Sorts) by Brooke Herter James
Brooke Herter James won her first creative writing award in eighth grade.
Then she did a bunch of other things like going to college, public health nursing and raising three kids.
Several years ago, she remembered that eighth grade story (or maybe it was really the award) and decided to spend more time at what she likes to do most.
So now she writes.
She writes sometimes for little kids, sometimes for older kids and the rest of the time for anyone else who doesn’t fit into either of those two categories.
She likes writing funny stories but most of her poems are pretty serious.
She lives in a very old house in Vermont with her husband,
two donkeys, three chickens and a dog.
(Actually, the donkey and the chickens live in the barn)
She is honored to be the recipient of the 2018 Hunger Mountain's Katherine Paterson Best Picture Book Manuscript Award
She is honored to have been chosen as a finalist in the Poetry Society of Vermont's 2018 National Poetry Contest and to be the winner of the 2024 Fish Poetry Prize.
