For the past few weeks, the stars of Deadpool & Wolverine have apparently been trying to test the waters to see if there is enough enthusiasm about Channing Tatumโs surprise cameo appearance in the movie as Gambit to merit finally making a solo movie for the character.
(Tatum spent years developing a film for his X-Man character, but it was never actually produced.)
Tatum himself has talked publicly about how he still hopes Marvel will let him make a Gambit movie. Then Ryan Reynolds said if Marvel made Gambit, heโd show up in it as Deadpool. Now Reynolds has posted a deleted scene from the film, showing Tatumโs Gambit as a survivor walking through the chaos of the filmโs big battle in the Void between the title characters and the forces of Cassandra Nova โ with the implication being that the character survived, and could potentially return.

Fox announced Channing Tatum would play Gambit years ago, and even brought him out on the stage at Comic-Con with their entire X-Men cast to hype his solo film. The movie got trapped in development hell, though, and never materialized before Disney acquired Fox, and with it, the X-Men movie license. (Tatum later said the experience left him โtraumatized.โ) Marvel has yet to formally announce an X-Men movie; Deadpool & Wolverine was the first film set in the Fox X-Men timeline to explicitly connect to the Marvel multiverse.
A Gambit movie does not seem like it would fit very easily into whatever Marvelโs grand plans are for the X-Men. But thereโs no reason Tatum couldnโt play Gambit in an X-Men movie. Or what about a Gambit TV series for Disney+? That seems like a better fit for this sort of slightly niche project โ although perhaps not for the budget Marvel and Disney would need to spend on such an endeavor.

Channing Tatum isn't finished making a name for himself.
Ryan Reynolds took to Instagram Tuesday to share a deleted scene from Marvel's "Deadpool & Wolverine" featuring more of Tatum in his scene-stealing role of Gambit. The scene also confirmed that Tatum's character survived the events of the film, suggesting he could return in a future project.
The extra moment takes place after the fight sequence in which Deadpool, Wolverine, Gambit and other heroes take on Cassandra Nova's (Emma Corrin) forces. In the new clip, Gambit is seen in the aftermath of the fight. As he turns around, orange light reflecting on his face indicates that a portal has appeared in front of him, implying he is about to escape from the Void.
Ryan Reynolds confirmed in a Deadpool & Wolverine deleted scene posted to his social media that Channing Tatumโs Gambit survives the fight in the void alongside Jennifer Garnerโs Elektra, Wesley Snipesโ Blade and Dafne Keenโs Laura/X-23.
When the end credits rolled, it was uncertain if any of the characters who came togerther to defeat Cassandra Novaโs (Emma Corrin) henchmen survived the battle. But, at the very least, Tatumโs now-iconic and heavily memed take on Gambit made it out alive.
While the video doesnโt reveal much, it sees the character from behind, walking in the middle of a few henchmen on the floor, before he turns around as the video pans up to his face, and he grins.
There may not be any other Gambit projects in works at the moment, but the fact that he makes it out of Deadpool 3 alive means he could return for a stand-alone film in the future or appear in another Marvel Cinematic Universe film.
Tatum had been set to portray the Cajun mutant in a stand-alone film that was canceled after Disney acquired 21st Century Fox.
In an Instagram post from the weekend Deadpool & Wolverine hit theaters, the Blink Twice star praised Reynolds for allowing him to bring Gambit to life when he thought he had lost him forever.
โ[Reynolds] fought for me and Gambit. I will owe him probably forever. Cause Iโm not sure how I could ever do something that would be equal to what this has meant to me,โ Tatum wrote. โI love ya buddy. Shawn Levy as well. Truly such a brilliant creator on every single level. All things happen for a reason. Iโm so grateful to be in this movie. Itโs a masterpiece in my opinion. And just pure bad ass joy. I was literally screaming in the theater. LFG!!โ
A week later, Reynolds continued the lovefest, singing Tatumโs praises for his portrayal of the superhero in the record-breaking box office hit.
โGambit is a guy Chan was born to play,โ the Free Guy star wrote. โHis story is similar to mine in that he spent a decade trying to put the most comic-accurate version of Gambit on the big screen. Remy LeBeau is grafted to his soul and needs to come out and deal. And Gambit found his author in Chan. Heโs one of the coolest, smartest characters in Comics and still largely unexplored. I want more โ and from what I saw in theaters, you do too. Having the chance to say goodbye to some of these heroes is as important as having new characters to root forโฆ and rooting for Gambit is easy. Rooting for Chan is even easier. Heโs one of the greatest, hardest working, kindest people in this entire industry.โ
