At 20’ high, these Union Metal-designed lampposts were at one time ubiquitous around Los Angeles’ major thoroughfares. In the mid- to late-1920s, Los Angeles installed upwards of 4,200 of these in various neighborhoods, from South Central to Hollywood. These lampposts were (and are) both a perfect addition to and a defining visual characteristic of the style that became L.A. Noir – urban, cosmopolitan, new, but also mysterious, stylized, and old – providing islands of light in the sea of darkness.
