The Broadway Rose is one of the “original” Los Angeles streetlights. Manufactured by the Keystone Iron & Steel Works, the Broadway Rose is a very ornate two-bulb electrolier streetlight. This model was installed in Broadway in downtown Los Angeles in 1919, at a time when street lights were still a relatively new phenomenon and the city center was booming and rapidly modernizing. The Broadway Improvement Association had these very ornate boulevard-style lampposts created as a statement – that Los Angeles could light up its commercial thoroughfares for the general population to shop and dine in the evening, and could do it with style. Indeed, these 24’ lampposts, designed with floral motifs on the base, shaft, and lantern heads, proved so popular that additional models were installed on surrounding streets. Some of which are still in existence today.
