These lampposts exist only in Barnsdall Park, situated at the corner of Hollywood Blvd. and Vermont Ave in East Hollywood. The site was originally the private property of Aline Barnsdall, a wealthy oil heiress, who planned to build her own small community there, with a main manor, a guest house, and various studio spaces for artists-in-residence. In 1919, she hired Frank Lloyd Wright to design the property, out of which came the Hollyhock House – a stunning piece of Wright’s distinctive architecture, this one Mayan-inspired. Hollyhocks were Aline Barnsdall’s favorite flower, and so stylized versions of them made their way into the estate’s motif. In 1926 the site was donated to the city of Los Angeles, who then converted it into a public park with a focus on the arts. These lampposts were installed after the fact, mimicking the Frank Lloyd Wright stylized vision of a Hollyhock Flower.
