Even for a city with a variety of impressive streetlight designs, these lamp posts are utterly unique. Manufactured by the incredibly-named King Ferronite corporation, these streetlamps stand around 25’ high. These were installed on Wilshire Blvd between downtown and mid city between 1928 and 1933 to compete with neighboring Beverly Hills, which had installed their own ornate streetlamps along their stretch of Wilshire Blvd. It’s hard to pin any one style on these lanterns – they borrow from various design camps – Egyptian, Beaux Artes, Art Deco, Victorian – all wrapped around an Asian-style light box. Nowadays only a few remain along Wilshire Blvd. in MacArthur Park.
